On The Outside Looking In

If you’re a follower of Alex’s blog, this might sound familiar. I had this written to post on the special day but she beat me to the punch! We are so alike!

It’s a long post so it’s okay if you skip it and only read the memes but if you read it all, I’ll send you a virtual cookie.

Today’s the first day of classes for my Alma Mater. It’s kind of bizarre not going back to school after being in it for forever. Everyone’s reunited and it’s so strange that I am not. Some people love work more but I miss those last couple years of college. That’s when I found people I actually felt comfortable being myself around. Maybe this will change after a few more months but for now, that’s how it feels to me.

I’ve been told I get along with everyone. Walking down the halls or through campus, I would see someone I know or they would see me and we would exchanges “hellos” to the point where I was dubbed “popular”.

They cannot be more wrong.

If y’all don’t know by now, I immigrated from Hong Kong so in pre-school, I didn’t understand English. But was able to still make friends. I guess when you’re a kid all you had to do was share crayons.

When elementary came, still not fully understanding English, kids jumped at the chance to be my friend. Maybe because they’ve never seen a little Chinese girl before? I don’t know.

It’s weird how it happened as well. All the cool kids were in another classroom yet I got along with them during lunch, recess, and arts. Guess sharing your jump rope with the girls and playing basketball with the boys helped, too.

I still felt like an outsider though since the lack of English puts you in a barrier.

After 4th grade, my parents told me I get to finish 5th before moving to somewhere else in Houston. But shit happens and I didn’t get to do my 5th grade with my friends I grew up with. I didn’t get to say goodbye. I lost them all.

It was hard making new friends at a new place going into 5th grade when everyone already had their own friends. I got really shy but met Manvi on the bus and we became instant best friends. We even had best friend gems. We’re not best friends anymore but for some reason, we both still have our gems and talk about it whenever we bump into one another. I met some of her friends and made some of my own.

After elementary ended, my cousin, Timothy who was in the same grade as me, told me I hung out with the popular kids and was surprised. Really? … Uh … Okay.

Middle school happened. More than half the people from 5th grade went to a different middle school so I had to yet again make new friends. I got even more shy. I didn’t talk a lot in and out of class except for orchestra since Timothy and my brother were in that class with me but I got along with everyone and would know anyone that walked down the hall. I had classes with some football players, basketball players, cheerleaders, etc. and we got along well. But I was still reserved.

I was told I was friends with the populars. So why didn’t I feel that way? I still felt like the awkward kid.

High school came and less than 1/4th of my middle school went to my high school. Everyone else went to the high school that was 3 minutes away from my house. Sometimes school districts suck at zoning. My commute was 10 minutes to school … and that’s without traffic.

Shy yet again I kept to myself most of the time but as the days went on, I started making new friends naturally. Being in basketball and orchestra helped a lot. Sophomore year I broke through my shell and got all crazy and met a lot of people . Everyone seemed to know me. Yet I still didn’t feel like I fit in. But people who walked with me felt I was because I knew anyone I passed by in the halls.

When I finally thought I found some great friends who I never want to leave, college came. We all went to different colleges and it got kind of hard to keep in touch. Even with Facebook, things were different. If someone doesn’t want to make the effort, it doesn’t work. I’m still friends with some of them and they are now my bestest. I would not change that for the world.

It took a while but I started to make friends in college. Went through many of them if you ask me. College is a place you grow and find yourself … some people never grew up and I didn’t want to stay through the immaturity.

source

Throughout all those years, I never felt I fit in no matter how much I tried with whatever group I was in. I was told I was “popular” but I felt like the kid from the outside looking in. I was never in the “in” crowd. I was never popular. I just knew a lot of people. That is all.

I never felt like I fit in until the end of college. I found people in my life I could finally be myself (other than the ones I could obviously before) because they believed in the same things as me and didn’t care how weird I was, I hope.

Now I’m at my new job trying hard to stay in touch with them. But it’s hard when they don’t reciprocate. It’s even harder to make friends now because all you do is work. Hopefully some workers become my real life friends but that’s unlikely.

I’m thankful for the friends that text me or message me or email me through the weeks … it makes work more bearable and shows that they care. I’m actually grateful that I’m reconnecting with some of my good friends from high school. It feels great. I’m not sure where it’s going but I hope they’re here to stay.

source

I’m glad I got over the phase of trying to fit in because no matter where I’m at, I know I have the bestest.

Price texted me the other day that he’s too busy working and getting his MBA to make friends and stay in touch with them. My response? I’ve been through that. All through high school and college. So I learned.

To me, if they really truly are your friends, no matter how long you’ve been distant, they’ll always be there because they know you’re working towards your future that defines the rest of your life. Real friends will always be your friend. No matter how long. It’s that simple.

With Price it’s been 6 years give or take and we can still hold a conversation when I saw him again at Alyssa’s wedding.

Same goes with blogger friends. I’m always here for y’all! Even if we never met. Winking smile

That’s the end of my reflection. Hope you all have a great hump day! And for those starting school today or have school, hope it went well. Enjoy it while you can!

P.S. If you were wondering, Manvi went to all the same schools as me … even college. Bizarre, right? We’re not close anymore but it’s always nice when we see each other.

Happy Daddy Day!

So before I begin reviewing all the places we went and all the happenings I just wanted to tell a quick story. Ready?

As I told y’all before, my sissy is off with Brett, her bf, to Colorado for a wedding then heading to Iowa for another wedding. Anyway, I woke up from a weird picture text of purple, yellow, and blue bouquet.

What you caught the bouquet?! They’re soo pretty!!

It hit me in the face!

haha of course, only her. She never told me if she meant to catch it or not but if it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be. 😉  I told my mum what happened and she laughed her butt off.

I wish I could put the picture of the bouquet on here but I can’t get pictures out of my phone but do believe me:  They were gorgeous!

Okay back to our regularly scheduled program:

So obviously .. Happy Father’s Day!! My dad got this day off work so we can celebrate and have family time. Sissy was gone, brother was in Dallas so all that was left was me, mum, and June. Since our dad’s birthday was just a few weeks ago (June 3rd) we always buy a big present for his birthday and nothing for Father’s day. We got him a new laptop. He loves it and uses it daily.

For breakfast/lunch we went to:

Dim Sum King
9160 Bellaire Blvd #B
Houston, TX 77036
(713) 270-6788

Um .. not quite sure why it’s #B .. that’s not even a number but oh well. That’s what it says.

This is everything we ordered. Top to bottom. I’m not sure what they’re called in English but we ordered a total of 10 dishes. Mmmm … This place compared to other places is pretty good. They are clean for sure, though they have a small space. Especially in the front where people walk in, which is a bummer because when we do have to wait for seats we are packed sardines.

They have really great service. Wonderful service. Whatever we needed they got and didn’t mess up once. Applaud.

On the left is the breakdown of all the foods we ordered. I don’t know how they justify what is a small, medium, and large dish but oh well. If you wanted tea, it costs money so the adults drank tea while I opted out for water. Total came out to be $30.65 which isn’t bad for dim sum price here in Houston. Plus, it’s delicious! I would suggest you come here and try their dishes. I just wished they relocated to a bigger place. They would make so much more money!

After lunch June and I went into:

Yannick Cafe Bakery
9110 A Bellaire Blvd
Houston, TX 77036
(713) 773-2977

in the same shopping mall as Dim Sum King, while my parents went into the dvd/magazine store next door.

Look at the array of desserts they sell. Yum! And they are so beautifully decorated.

I decided on an Egg Tart | $0.80 instead. Can you say yum?! We only bought one … not all that stuff on the tray. Their crust wasn’t the usual crust. I felt it was made out of butter cookies. It had that taste to it and wasn’t flaky like usual egg tart crusts. Yum! I liked it a lot.

Then we headed into the store my parents were in and I came out with this:

Yeah … I’m Chinese and I’m letting it show. I still listen to Chinese music even though I emigrated here when I was like 4? Fluent Chinese speaker right here! Anyway, it’s Raymond Lam’s 2009 (?) concert. Yay! For $5.99. Cheap!! Yes! Score! I haven’t watched it yet but I will next week when I have time. I’m excited. My favorite song from him is on it.

For those that are Chinese and know who this is, I know you think he sucks but … we all have our opinions.

Since my dad and mum needed to get their eyes checked and get new glasses, June and I went to various stores to check out things.

One of the things we found was a tiny knitted hat. It’s so cute!! Don’t worry, I didn’t buy it.

We then went to:

Tapioca House
9104 Bellaire Blvd #B
Houston, TX 77036
(713) 272-6468

Two Milk Tea Tapioca | $1.99 + $0.55 (for large) please! The regular sized is June’s and the large was for me, dad, and mum to share. We got it with the tiny tapioca because I feel the large ones were too chewy. Mmm … yummy drink for such a hot, hot day. Sadly my mum got not a drop. Dad drank it all before she got out of the eye exam room. Whoops. She bought herself a little something, something later though so it all works out.

We went home to relax and unwind. Dinner was coming up. (Our family goes crazy eating when it’s a special day. Gaining back weight .. darn!)

After many, many hours, we went out for dinner at:

Le Lai Restaurant (They misspelled their own name … fail?)
9600 Bellaire Blvd Ste 103
Houston, TX 77036
(713) 988-6888

We got the Dinner for Four [Crab Mea Soup with Fish Maw; Salt Baked Chicken (half); Fillet of Sole (steamed) with Mixed Vegetable; Salted Pepper Squid; Garlic Vegetbale; Pan Fried Noodle with Soy Sauce] | $39.50.

Bad picture quality! Sorry! It was steamy everywhere. We ordered an extra Eggplant with Beef Clay Pot. Not too sure how much it costs but mmm .. yummo.

All the food was delicious.

They even gave us free dessert!! Yum but super fatty.

I would recommend this place but then something happened:

I found a piece of hair in my tea. Yuck!! I know for sure it’s not mine so it could be someone who was making the tea.

Disgusting.

Everyone came home doing their chores and such and now only my mum and I are awake. I love winding down after such a busy day.

I hope all of y’all had a good Father’s Day and those that don’t celebrate, that y’all had a good day! And weekend!!

Night!

San Dong

On May 27th, Mum and June and I went to:

San Dong
9938 Bellaire Blvd
Houston, TX 77036
(713) 271-3945

We ordered a few plates to share and took the rest home for my dad and use it as part of our dinner. Yum! I tend to be in love with leftovers.

June wanted this. Not really sure what it’s called but I didn’t like it. My mum and her did though. It’s a mixture of peanuts, carrots, and zucchini. It has a slimy sauce … I think that’s what I didn’t like about it.

Mmm … Pig Ears. I know what you’re thinking … GROSS?! But don’t say you hate something til you try it. I wish people would eat it before they judge. Sometimes it’s better than they think but because they have the mentality that something is from a certain place, they would already not like it and have a bias opinion about things.

Mum ordered this. Wenchou Won Ton Soup | $4.75. Nom nom. It wasn’t my favorite out of all the stuff we ordered but it was okay. It has a very thin wrapper and the meat inside was pretty soft. I ate a lot of the bok choy though! Mum loved this one the most.

Here we have the Beef Soup Dumplings [12 dumplings] | $5.25. This might look like the Won Ton .. but it’s not. The soup has more flavor of a beef stock and these are dumplings .. not won tons. Therefore the wrapper in these are thicker and has a little bit of a chew to it. It was good but the soup was too salty for my taste. June loved this one the most.

This is the Leek Pork Dumplings [15 dumplings] | $5.25. This is like the Beef Soup Dumpling except this has no soup. And inside there’s leeks! Yum! This was the first dish I ever had when I first came here. But I have a new love now .. which brings me to ….

Cabbage Pork Dumplings [15 dumplings] | $5.25. This was juicier than the Leek Pork Dumplings so this became my favorite.

Just doing this post makes me want to go here this weekend. I would definitely order the Cabbage Pork Dumplings only …………. ALL FOR ME!

Star Ice & Teriyaki

So after our family went on our day trip to Herman Park and then some, we went on to Bellaire for lunch:

Star Ice & Teriyaki
9889 Bellaire Blvd
Houston, TX 77036

First up we have the #12 Beef Noodle Soup | $4.75. I’m not a big fan of noodles like these. It has a salty broth and the meat is very chewy. But I love the noodles. It has the right bounce to it. It’s one of their most known dishes so do try it.

Here we have the #29 Spicy Squid (Fried) | $3.00. I love this dish. I’m not a big fan of squid because it’s always so chewy but this is terrrific. It’s chewy but not as chewy as other squids are. The outside texture is crunchy but at the same time a little soft. Yum!

Here we have the#2 Beef Teriayaki | $4.28. First thought when they brought this out was … I’m not going to be full off of this. Boy was I wrong. Definitely enough food for one. I even shared some with the family.

Here is the #37 Spicy Chicken Nuggets | $3.00. Same as the squid along the taste type but the chicken inside is very moist. It goes really well with rice.

Although I’m not a fan of the beef noodle, I would come back here again for the spicy chicken and the spicy fried squid. It’s not my first choice though.

Golden Wok

A.V. and I got hungry during dinner time last night and he felt like Chinese food so we decided to go here:

Golden Wok
8822 Wurzbach
San Antonio, TX 78240
(210) 615 – 8282
www.golden-wok.com/locations.htm

We both started out with the Hot & Sour Soup [chicken, crabmeat, bamboo shoots, black mushrooms, tofu, and egg prepared in a rich spicy chicken broth] | $3.49. When you go to some Chinese restaurant the seem to mess this up but this place has some good soup. I would go back for this whenever I crave this type of soup.

We then continued to our entrees. I got the Singapore Noodles [thin rice noodles stir-fried with cabbage, carrots, scallions, bell pepper, and egg with curry flavor with beef] | $9.29.  You could get it with chicken, shrimp or scallops or a combination of all for $9.99. This tasted like what I have at home usually. Nothing too special. I would go here to get this again if I ever crave it though.

A.V. got the Sesame Chicken [chicken with sesame] | $8.29. It came with steamed rice. The chicken was really juicy on the inside. Pure white. So good!

It’s not as great as the Chinese Restaurants back in Houston of course but if I was to crave Chinese food, I would go here to at least have part of my taste buds satisfied.
