Happy Daddy Day!

So before I begin reviewing all the places we went and all the happenings I just wanted to tell a quick story. Ready?

As I told y’all before, my sissy is off with Brett, her bf, to Colorado for a wedding then heading to Iowa for another wedding. Anyway, I woke up from a weird picture text of purple, yellow, and blue bouquet.

What you caught the bouquet?! They’re soo pretty!!

It hit me in the face!

haha of course, only her. She never told me if she meant to catch it or not but if it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be. 😉  I told my mum what happened and she laughed her butt off.

I wish I could put the picture of the bouquet on here but I can’t get pictures out of my phone but do believe me:  They were gorgeous!

Okay back to our regularly scheduled program:

So obviously .. Happy Father’s Day!! My dad got this day off work so we can celebrate and have family time. Sissy was gone, brother was in Dallas so all that was left was me, mum, and June. Since our dad’s birthday was just a few weeks ago (June 3rd) we always buy a big present for his birthday and nothing for Father’s day. We got him a new laptop. He loves it and uses it daily.

For breakfast/lunch we went to:

Um .. not quite sure why it’s #B .. that’s not even a number but oh well. That’s what it says.

This is everything we ordered. Top to bottom. I’m not sure what they’re called in English but we ordered a total of 10 dishes. Mmmm … This place compared to other places is pretty good. They are clean for sure, though they have a small space. Especially in the front where people walk in, which is a bummer because when we do have to wait for seats we are packed sardines.

They have really great service. Wonderful service. Whatever we needed they got and didn’t mess up once. Applaud.

On the left is the breakdown of all the foods we ordered. I don’t know how they justify what is a small, medium, and large dish but oh well. If you wanted tea, it costs money so the adults drank tea while I opted out for water. Total came out to be $30.65 which isn’t bad for dim sum price here in Houston. Plus, it’s delicious! I would suggest you come here and try their dishes. I just wished they relocated to a bigger place. They would make so much more money!

in the same shopping mall as Dim Sum King, while my parents went into the dvd/magazine store next door.

Look at the array of desserts they sell. Yum! And they are so beautifully decorated.

I decided on an Egg Tart | $0.80 instead. Can you say yum?! We only bought one … not all that stuff on the tray. Their crust wasn’t the usual crust. I felt it was made out of butter cookies. It had that taste to it and wasn’t flaky like usual egg tart crusts. Yum! I liked it a lot.

Then we headed into the store my parents were in and I came out with this:

Yeah … I’m Chinese and I’m letting it show. I still listen to Chinese music even though I emigrated here when I was like 4? Fluent Chinese speaker right here! Anyway, it’s Raymond Lam’s 2009 (?) concert. Yay! For $5.99. Cheap!! Yes! Score! I haven’t watched it yet but I will next week when I have time. I’m excited. My favorite song from him is on it.

For those that are Chinese and know who this is, I know you think he sucks but … we all have our opinions.

Since my dad and mum needed to get their eyes checked and get new glasses, June and I went to various stores to check out things.

One of the things we found was a tiny knitted hat. It’s so cute!! Don’t worry, I didn’t buy it.

Two Milk Tea Tapioca | $1.99 + $0.55 (for large) please! The regular sized is June’s and the large was for me, dad, and mum to share. We got it with the tiny tapioca because I feel the large ones were too chewy. Mmm … yummy drink for such a hot, hot day. Sadly my mum got not a drop. Dad drank it all before she got out of the eye exam room. Whoops. She bought herself a little something, something later though so it all works out.

We went home to relax and unwind. Dinner was coming up. (Our family goes crazy eating when it’s a special day. Gaining back weight .. darn!)

After many, many hours, we went out for dinner at:

We got the Dinner for Four [Crab Mea Soup with Fish Maw; Salt Baked Chicken (half); Fillet of Sole (steamed) with Mixed Vegetable; Salted Pepper Squid; Garlic Vegetbale; Pan Fried Noodle with Soy Sauce] | $39.50.

Bad picture quality! Sorry! It was steamy everywhere. We ordered an extra Eggplant with Beef Clay Pot. Not too sure how much it costs but mmm .. yummo.

All the food was delicious.

They even gave us free dessert!! Yum but super fatty.

I would recommend this place but then something happened:

I found a piece of hair in my tea. Yuck!! I know for sure it’s not mine so it could be someone who was making the tea.

Disgusting.

Everyone came home doing their chores and such and now only my mum and I are awake. I love winding down after such a busy day.

So I went home at noon. Plans with the sissy didn’t work out with her having to leave asap to road trip to Colorado. Oh well. Next time for sure. I’ll see if she’ll pay for my breakfast and mani then.

Fat People Are Harder To Kidnap

Funny, yes? And it’s so true. There’s never been a kidnapping case with fat people. At least, I’ve never heard about it. Have you?!

Anyway, after dinner June and I had a sweet tooth for ice cream. Since June didn’t want to drive and my dad’s car was blocking mine, we nixed the TCBY run and went to Walgreens instead.

No we didn’t drive there. We walked there. It’s right by our neighborhood so why waste gas when we can be healthy, right? Our goodies. 1 bag of Kettle Cooked Sea Salt and Cracked Pepper, 4 Magmum Classic Ice Cream, 2 Redbox movies: From Prada to Nada and Just Go With It.

Mmm … Magnum Ice Cream. This was the kind of ice cream I ate when I was in Hong Kong. Then I moved to America … and it was gone. I believe they recently started selling it here in America so you can see how happy I was. Snatched four. One for me, mum, dad, and June. Sissy would be jealous.

Ain’t she a beaut? I ate this as slowly as I could. Didn’t want it to go away in a blink of an eye. For almost $3 a piece, I had to enjoy it! The reason I love this ice cream so much is because of their chocolate. It’s so thick and when you bite into it you hear that cracking … not too sure how to describe it so just buy one and see for yourself!

Branded an “M” … fancy. Fancy indeed.

Holy Devlin!

Have you seen Just Go With It? It’s about a doctor who pretends to be married to pick up chicks and his receptionist was always by his side. Even when he needed to use her and her kids to get a hot young girl.

It’s very hilarious and you laugh pretty much the WHOLE ENTIRE time. You will love it just as much as I did.

Anyway, Holy Devlin came from that movie. Um yeah … I watched that before running. Holy Devlin. Holy Devlin. Meaning Holy Shiet!

Holy Devlin .. I’m actually doing it! Holy Devlin … I’m almost done!

I kept telling myself. Three more, Two more, Last one. I split the 20 minutes in my head into 5 minutes each since the lady does tell you when every 5 minutes has passed. And I realized I ran faster and farther than when doing intervals. I think that’s the whole point? Not too sure. When I got to the last 10 seconds of running I went full out and ran like a deer – prancing.

My mum said I looked like I was dying. Um … thanks mum. Good to know I look like shiet.

Time to relax and watch From Prada to Nada. A story about a two girls who were downright rich. One was book smart aspiring to be a lawyer while the other uses her looks to get what she wants. Everything changes when their dad dies and they find out they are bankrupt. Moving into the new lifestyle of the poor, will they survive?

Not too sure how this movie will be since it’s not on big screen but anything is good right now.

*Edit: I actually loved this movie. However many stars other people give … I give it five out of five. Reason? It was very heart warming with all the family love. No matter how obnoxious the bitchy girl on the right is, she always had someone there for her – family.

Apple Crumbled Pie

I had a leftover pie shell from the Chocolate Chip Cookie Pie I made last time so since we were cooking with the girls, I thought to use it up before I left school for the summer. And since I had some apples, Apple Crumbled Pie seemed like the safest bet.

Apple Crumbled Pie

Ingredients:

     Pie:

  • 1 unbaked pie shell, 9-inch
  • 6 cups peeled apple slices
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp salt

     Topping:

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts

Preparation:

  1. Fill pie shell with apple slices. Combine granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt; sprinkle over apples.
  2. Combine topping ingredients until crumbly; sprinkle over top of pie. Bake at 400° for 45-50 minutes, until apples are tender and topping is browned.

Again, no walnuts or pecans were added since someone could be allergic. It came out really juicy and I loved it. I left it there for them to eat. Not too sure what happened to it.

Gigi’s Cupcakes

Jenny and I wanted something sweet and we wanted cupcakes. We landed into:

We got the 4 for $9.99 deal since it was Valentine’s month.

First up, Wedding Cake [white cake topped with a vanilla buttercream frosting & sprinkled with white nonpareils]. I love nonpareils! Jenny and I made a big mess all over their table. Whoops. We cleaned it up though!

Next up we have the Texas Milk Chocolate [milk chocolate cake topped with milk chocolate frosting, chocolate sprinkles & a yellow fondant star]. The fondant star was not even a full star. I was a little sad. One corner was missing. I feel jipped! Just kidding.

Here we have Peanut Butter Cup [milk chocolate cake topped with peanut butter frosting & honey roasted peanuts drizzled with chocolate ganache]. Nice touch with some peanuts on top.

Last we have Tiramisu [coffee & Kahlua flavored cake with cream cheese, topped with coffee & Kahlua flavored frosting, dutch coca & chocolate sprinkles].

The lady said that you can keep the cupcakes for up to three days. I do not agree with that. By the third day it wasn’t good at all. But nonetheless, it was good. They pile on too much frosting though and the cake is too sweet.

Still on the search for my favorite cupcake place.

Salted Caramel Cupcakes

On February 9th, us girls (Rory Jane, Elyse, Yelena, Melanie, Michelle B., and I) decided to have a girls night and bake! We decided on Salted Caramel Cupcakes and gossip and catch up! We decided on this recipe because it’s super new since all of us have never made it before!

Salted Caramel Cupcakes

Ingredients:

     Cupcakes:

  • 1 1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 3/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (room temp)
  • 2 large eggs (room temp)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • sea salt (preferably Fleur de Sel)

     Buttercream:

  • 1 stick butter
  • 3-4 cups confectioners sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • pinch of sea salt

Preparation:

     Cupcakes:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°. Line a standard 12 cup cupcake pan with liners.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, beat the sugars and butter using an electric mixer until light and fluffy, 3 minutes. Then add eggs and vanilla until well combined.
  3. Afterward, add flour mixture in 3 batches alternating with the milk in 2 additions. Beat on low until just combined and scrape down sides of bowl. Fill prepared cupcake cups and bake for about 20 minutes until toothpick comes out clean.

     Buttercream:

  1. In a heavy bottomed saucepan, cook granulated sugar over medium high heat until it begins to melt. It will become an amber brown … CARAMEL!
  2. Carefully pour cream in, in a steady stream. The whole thing will bubble and sputter but just keep stirring until completely smooth. Set aside to cool a bit.
  3. While caramel is cooling, using a mixer, cream butter until fluffy and smooth. Add confectioners sugar half a cup at a time.You may not need all 4 cups. When consistency is how you like it, add a pinch of sea salt and take a spoonful of caramel and add it to the frosting in dollops. Gently swirl.

**There will be left over caramel. You can store it in an airtight container for up to 1 week. To use, bring into room temperature.

Just wanted to show you what happened to us. Rory Jane made our caramel but for some reason it turned back to powder. Here’s what it looked like:

We’re not really sure what happened but we crumbled some and put it on top of our cupcakes so no harm done. We took another turn on it, this time I tried and here’s what it looked like:

Yay! Second time is a charm! Sadly it wasn’t all great. There were big chunks in it but the majority of it was liquidy just like it should be. Sadly we added it to our buttercream before it cooled down so our buttercream didn’t stand up the way we wanted to. It still came out wonderfully though!

It stood it’s ground but once it set a little it spread out. To see the result of this cupcake, scroll back up to the beginning! I must say it all turned out great. It was too sweet for my taste. We added a lot of sea salt to make it not as sweet. Defeats the purpose, I know. But it’s how you like!

Jenny, Tammy, and I decided it was easier if one person paid so everything is in the same box. The things I bought were Blueberry Centers (These were not great at all. It tasted better when it was sitting in the fridge for a night. Instead go for the regular centers. They taste way better.), Sugar Yeast Donut (I like when my donuts has little crystals on it and let me just say this was magnificent. So soft and fluffy!), and Glazed Donut (It wasn’t that great. I’ll stick to the Sugar Yeast.).

I would come back here again to try other things that they have but so far I only liked the Sugar Yeast Donuts.
